Karelia: a journey through the ages. Ruskeala Park: ground part
The next day after our accommodation in the Black Stones resort complex, we went to Ruskeala Park. It takes less than an hour to get to it by car from the Black Stones recreation center.
The park is very large, and you can spend a whole day visiting it. It is noteworthy that from the city of Sortavala, this park can be reached by retro train. For me, Ruskeala Park is divided into 2 parts: ground and underground. I'll start the story with the ground part of the park: Ruskeala Park, located in picturesque Karelia, is a unique corner of nature and history, where every stone and lake breathe old legends and riddles. This is a place that literally transports visitors to another world, where the beauty of nature is combined with human creation, creating a unique atmosphere. Ruskeala is famous for its marble canyon, which is the main attraction of the park. Here, among dense forests and clear reservoirs, lies the marble lake, framed by high cliffs, the colors of which range from snow-white to deep gray.
This natural amphitheater, created by human hands in the XVIII century, when marble was mined here for the construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral and St. Michael's Castle in St. Petersburg, leaves an unforgettable impression. Today, Marble Canyon is open to tourists all year round. In summer, you can go boating on the crystal clear waters of the lake, enjoying the views of underwater caves and grottoes illuminated by natural light.

In winter, when the lake freezes, the park turns into a fairyland where you can walk on the ice, skate and even go on an excursion into the depths of the frozen canyon. For outdoor enthusiasts, Ruskeala Park offers many opportunities: rock climbing, diving in underwater caves, hiking trails and routes of varying difficulty. And for those who prefer a more relaxing pastime, the park offers walks along well-maintained paths, rest on the lake shore and picnics in picturesque glades. Having visited Ruskeala once, I want to come back here again and again, each time to discover something new and admire the beauty and grandeur of this amazing place.
