Karelia: a journey through the ages Continuation of the incident. Ahvenkoski Waterfalls
The Ahvenkoski Waterfalls are 5 km from Ruskeala Park. In fact, they are not as large as the park. We stayed in them for about three hours. The Ahvenkoski Waterfalls are part of the official tourist route. There is a large parking space nearby, including buses.
Ahvenkoski, which means "Perch River" in Finnish, got its name thanks to the Finnish settlers who lived in these places until the middle of the XX century. The Finns, known for their love of fishing, named the waterfalls after the perch that lives in local waters. The waterfalls are located on the Tohmajoki River.
Entrance to the waterfalls is paid, since the passage is carried out along equipped tourist paths. The first impression when you approach Ahvenkoski is the deafening roar of water falling rapidly from a height. It is said that it is especially beautiful here in spring, when the meltwater increases the flow, and the waterfalls become especially powerful and full-flowing. The sound of water, fresh air and amazing views make you forget about all worries and completely immerse yourself in natural harmony.
Interesting fact: the waterfalls of Ahvenkoski became famous thanks to the cinema. It was here that the scenes of the cult Soviet film "And the Dawns are quiet here" were filmed. It is interesting to imagine that the characters of the film walked along the same paths as the travelers now. Only then they weren't so well-maintained.
In general, Karelia is mysterious and unusual, full of hidden treasures that are worth discovering step by step. These waterfalls are one of these treasures.
