Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Yaroslavl: History, Murals and Renaissance

Today, on the feast of the Nativity of Christ, I will tell you about one of the churches, of which we have a lot. Holy Cross Church is one of the places where the history of our country can be traced. It is also one of the places of power that requires restoration and rebirth.

The Vozdvizhensky Temple complex in Yaroslavl, located on Cooperativnaya Street, is a unique architectural monument of the XVII—XVIII centuries.

The temple is located next to the pier on the Volga River, in the historical center of the city. According to legend, Yaroslav the Wise erected a Cross on the high bank of the Volga River at this place!

Initially, there were wooden churches here, but in 1675 the construction of a stone church began, which lasted until 1722. The main altar was consecrated in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and side chapels dedicated to the Kazan Icon and Saints Cosmas and Damian appeared in the church.

In 1734, the walls of the temple were painted by Yaroslavl artists. In the 19th century, extensive restoration work was carried out, thanks to which frescoes and iconostases were updated.

After the closure in the 1930s, the temples were used as warehouses. The domes were destroyed. The frescoes are damaged. In 2007, the complex was handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church, and now its historical appearance is being restored.

Divine services are held here, and an exhibition of paintings, cultural events and excursions are periodically held in one of the chapels.

Despite the fact that the temple needs restoration, many who have visited this temple consider it a place of strength and beauty for the soul!
